The painting has been attributed to Michel-Joseph Duvivier, who is thought to have painted at the Chelsea porcelain factory before working at Tournai between 1763 and 1771.

Object history
From a service whose 19th century owners, the Groutaiers de Resquin, presented a tradition that it belonged to Mqr. de François-Antoine de Méan (1756-1831), last Prince-Bishop of Liège.
