Acquisition type: Gift
Production
Acquired as Niderviller; attributed to Fulda in 1912 and then to Kiel; reattributed to Strasbourg by comparison with a Paul Hannong-marked plate; subsequently considered German by M. Gilbert Levy. The plate was considered to be of the same class as C.579-1909 and C.25&A-1929, but although it has a similar gilt border to C.25&A-1929, the painting is less accomplished. The latter two are examples of a class of Strasbourg wares associated with the painter Christian-Wilhelm Löwenfink and dated to c. 1748-54: see Dorothée Guillemé Brulon, Strasbourg & Niderviller - Sources et rayonnement, Histoire de la Faïence Francaise, Paris, 1999, p. 36-7, and Historiches Museum, Basel, Strassburger Keramik, 1986, cat. 116-17.
