Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This beaker was possibly intended for drinking chocolate, an expensive, fashionable and relatively new beverage imported from the New World and the Caribbean. It was made at the Saint-Cloud factory, near Paris, one of the earliest European factories to make soft-paste porcelain. Saint-Cloud aimed to provide oriental-style wares for the wealthy home market. The underglaze blue decoration has only a passing resemblance to oriental decoration however, as the factory's painters copied designs by the important French decorative artist, Jacques André du Cerceau.
