TWO GOBLETS

415, 416-1878

'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900'

These two goblets were included in the international exhibition, Paris, in 1878 and were bought from Brocard but they may have been designed some five years earlier. They show his eclectic range of interests in a wide variety of stylistic and technical possibilities arising from his training as a restorer. One, in white enamel and gilt, is derived from Persian or Saracenic metal decoration, while the other, in two shades of blue enamelling and gilding, is based on Venetian glass decoration in the same technique of the 1500s.
