Object history | The form of this vase may have been designed by Josef Ritter von Storck (1830-1902) and its ornament by Josef Salb (1845-1904). Exhibited at the Paris 1878 Exhibition. |
Historical context | Josef Ritter von Storck (1830-1902) and Josef Salb (1845-1904) were influential professors who designed prolifically for Lobmeyr and others. At the London 1862 Exhibition Lobmeyr's pieces employed antique and Renaissance motifs and forms. At the Paris 1878 Exhibition, where this vase was shown, their repertoire had expanded to take in oriental ornament form Indian to Arab. The vase, classical in form, displays a synthesis of Renaissance acanthus leaves, Indian scrolls and Arabic interlace. |
