Object history | Bought from the Bandinel Collection Acquisition type: Purchase |
Production | Acquired as Marseilles. Note in register: 'This plate has been suspected of being a forgery, which is surprising in view of its early date of acquisition. But similar fakes were being made later by Samson. See attached letter [which describes a similar one with the Samson mark]'. The plate was subsequently illustrated by Arthur Lane (French Faïence, 1948, pl. 58B) as Marseilles, Perrin or Bonnefoy factory, c. 1750-80. Examined in 1987 by M. Maternati of the Musée Grobet Labadie, Marseilles, to be from the Veuve Perrin factory. For similar wares attributed to Veuve Perrin factory and dated c.1765-end of the 18th century, see Dorothée Guillemé Brulon, Moustiers and Marseilles - Sources et rayonnement, Histoire de la Faïence Francaise, Paris, 1998, p. 107, and Danielle Maternati-Baldouy, Faïence et porcelaine de Marseille, 1997, cat. 181-2, where dated to c. 1763-75. |
