Cap for Mephistopheles worn by Henry Irving. Fitted cap shaped at front into points over cheeks in maroon silk. The front and sides are edged with a double row of tiny amber beads. Around the inside edge and across the head is a band of carmine red silk ribbon. The side points and upper edge are stiffened with tape covered boning.

Object history
This cap was worn by Henry Irving for his appearanace as Mephistopheles in the play 'Faust'. The play was adapted by W. G. Wills from the tragedy of the same name by Goethe, and was performed for the first time at the Lyceum Theatre, London, 19th December 1885. The scenery was designed by William Telbin and Hawes Craven, and the costumes were by Auguste et Cie, and Mrs Reid. The production was revived at the Lyceum on 14th April 1888; 14th April 1894; and 26th April 1902.
