Place of origin |
This poster was produced for 'Platform for Art', an enterprising scheme to install art works on various sites on the London Underground railway network. This poster is the so-called 'circuit poster', used across the network to advertise site-specific projects. In this case a series of posters with images by the artist and musician Janette Parris was produced in collaboration with Tower Records and installed at Piccadilly Circus tube station, near the entrance to the record store. Her cartoon-like drawings, reproduced on the posters, illustrate the members of a fictitious pop band called 'Going South', and include 'Janette on Vocals'. The other posters contribute elements to a narrative which are instalments in the band's history. Parris depicts her musicians as ordinary unpretentious people, and her drawing style is clear and readable. She seems to suggest that it is the stereotypically glossy airbrushed photographs of pop stars that are fictions.
