Chair

ca. 1760 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This chair is remarkable for the fact that it has all its original upholstery materials, from the webbing to the needlework covers, trimmed with brass nails. and is therefore a valuable record of the construction and shape of 18th-century upholstery. Around the front and sides the edge is built up with a ‘roll’ or ‘lip’, which is more densely stuffed than the middle of the seat. The needlework is an imitation of a woven damask. It is worked quite coarsely, and was almost certainly done in the home rather than in a professional workshop. The cover on the back of the chair-back is a stamped worsted wool, which has been stained red on one side to match the predominant colour of the needlework.
