This is a traditional doll display which is used as part of a ceremony in Japan. The Hina Matsuri or doll festival takes place every year on the 3rd March when mothers and daughters put out their special dolls in the hope that it will give the daughter good health and happiness. The display consists of seven tiers and each tier has a designated number of dolls and/or ornaments. From the top are: the traditionally dressed Emperor and Empress; three ladies in waiting; two imperial bodyguards; two gardeners and one cook. The bottom three steps have dowry chests, stoves, dressing table, a chest, and a tea service. At the very bottom of the tiers, carriages for the Emperor and Empress await.
