This elastoplast forms part of a collection that belonged to the family of Mr R W S Brander, the donor. The collection spans the period from the eighteenth century to the 1920s. It was kept by his aunt, Miss Anna Alicia Spieker Brander (ca. 1891-1977) due to her interest in historical costume, theatrical performances and fancy dress. On her death the collection was handed down to Mr Brander and stored in trunks until recently.

The elastoplast is in its original packaging and illustrates the type of object a woman might carry in her handbag at the turn of the twentieth century.
