Shoulder defence of steel decorated with etched and gilt borders, from an armour by Pompeo della Cesa. Both pauldron and gauntlet show the device of Manfredi of Faenza and the letters FERDINAND(?) in a crowned monogram.

Object history
Historical significance: Pompeo della Cesa (ca. 1537-8 - 1610) was armourer to the Spanish court in Milan.


The pauldron and gauntlet were bequeathed to the Museum by J.G. Joicey in 1919. They had previously been bought from the Breadalbane Collection at Christie's, London, 5th July 1917, lot 87.
