This is one of a group of German traditional toys which were made in the 1900s, but were based on very old designs. The whistle toys, like this horse and rider, are said to have been carved in the Berchtesgaden region. There are many examples of toys like these in the trade books of the time.

Physical description
The rider is of carved and painted wood, purple and white in colour with painted facial features. The horse is of plain wood with white markings down each side. The tail forms the whistle.
