This is one of a group of German traditional toys which were made in the 1900s, but were based on very old designs. The whistle toys, like this example, are said to have been carved in the Berchtesgaden region. When the whistle is blown, the birds whirl on the pivot. There are many examples of toys like these in the trade books of the time.

Physical description
The base is of plain wood and forms the whistle. The top is in the shape of a cage containing two birds on a central pivot. When the whistle is blown the pivot rotates very quickly.
