St. Jerome

Relief
17th century or 18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

St Jerome kneels beneath a tree, castigating himself. He holds a cross in his left hand, and an open book rests on the tree trunk. A skull is seen at his side, and a lion crouches nearby. In the heavens above two cherubim look down; St Jermoe gazes up at them. The wax resembles contempotary ivory carvings, and may have been related to an ivory, now lost. It was almost certainly a devotional object, and is likely to have been modeeld by a South German artist in the second half of the 17th or early 18th century.
