The Gothic Revival designer A.W.N.Pugin reputedly made drawings for tiles during his many journeys on the night train from London to Staffordshire while engaged in works for the Earl of Shrewsbury. This tile, adorned with a lion rampant, comes from Alton Towers, Shrewsbury's seat.

Physical description | Red earthenware tile, square with bevelled edges and hand-keyed back (irregular pointed stab marks). The decoration is encaustic, inlaid buff clay on red clay, the inlay is covered with yellow glaze. This tile is designed with interlaced square and crossed diagonals. |
