The Gothic Revival designer A.W.N.Pugin reputedly made drawings for tiles during his many journeys on the night train from London to Staffordshire while engaged in works for the Earl of Shrewsbury. This tile, adorned with a lion rampant, comes from Alton Towers, Shrewsbury's seat.

Physical description | Red earthenware tile, square with bevelled edges and hand-key back (irregular pointed stab marks). It has encaustic technique, inlaid buff clay on red clay. The buff has been covered in a yellow glaze. This tile is decorated with three wheatsheaves with a border and fleur-de-lis. |
