The Gothic Revival designer A.W.N.Pugin reputedly made drawings for tiles during his many journeys on the night train from London to Staffordshire while engaged in works for the Earl of Shrewsbury. This tile, adorned with a lion rampant, comes from Alton Towers, Shrewsbury's seat.

Physical description | Earthenware square tile with bevelled edges and hand-keyed back (irregular pointed stab marks). In encaustic style with inlaid buff clay on red body, the inlay covered with a yellow glaze. This designis of a rampant lion surround by a border, in yellow on red. |
