Wine Jug
1878-1879 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This shape of jug is a version of the antique Greek oenochoe or trefoil-lipped wine jug. It is unusually plain given the Victorian passion for elaborate decoration. Its ‘Neo-Grec’ form is typical of the enthusiasm for Neo-classical and other styles drawn from the ancient world, which remained in fashion throughout the 19th century.
