Historical context
Rationing of clothing was introduced in the United Kingdom by HM Government on 01/106/1941 to save resources for the war effort, and was reinforced three months later by the Limitation of Supplies (Clothing and Apparel) Order. Clothes rationing effectively lasted until 1949, but was not officially abolished until 1952: the coupons were required to accompany payment at the time of making purchases.
