Brief description
Electrotype. From the 1907 Register: "ELECTROTYPES. Rosewater Ewer and Dish, bearing the heraldic insignia (partly obliterated) of the Goldsmiths' Company. The originals, of silver-gilt, chased and repousse, are the property of Lord Petre. The ewer is engraved with the initials ER SB and the dish with the arms of Radclyffe impaling Barton. (Sir Edward Radclyffe [d. 1663], ancestor of the Earls of Derwentwater, married Elizabeth Barton ca. 1615. Mary, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Derwentwater, married the 8th Lord Petre.) Maker's mark, SO with a cinquefoil. ENGLISH; London hall-mark for 1611-12. Ewer, H. 14 1/4 in., diam. of body 5 1/2 in.; dish, diam. 19 1/2 in. 1907-13, 13a.
The ewer and dish are both decorated with shields supported by unicorns, and strapwork compartments enclosing dolphins.
The shields bear a wool-pack (?) between four pellets, obliterating the arms fo the Goldsmiths' Company.
The ewer is further ornamented with bunches of fruit, three fish (under the spout), stamped borders, and applied cherub-heads. The handle is formed of a winged terminal figure with twisted scaly tails. The further decoration of the dish includes bunches of fruit, snails, lion-masks, strapwork, covered cups, and buckles. In the centre is a raised boss bearing the coat-of-arms in pricked engraving. Stamped borders encircle the rim and the boss.
Note. - Unicorn supporters, covered cups, buckles and leopards' heads occur in the heraldry of the Goldsmiths' Company of London."
