Object history
The high esteem in which the silver-gilt and agate cup ( 38 -1867 ) was held by the Museum explains why it was chosen to be electrotyped as an example of genuine Renaissance design. Franchi, an Italian electrotypist who established a business in London produced many copies of museum objects for the V&A from 1855 until bought out by Elkington and Co in 1874. This electrotype cost 20 shillings to buy in 1872.
