Water Jug

1780-1781 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The owner of this late-18th century jug was the collector Joseph Bond who did not appear to have belonged to the usual circle of 19th century collectors. Very little is known about him although he was lending silver to the V&A from 1865. His taste for 18th and early 19th century silver filled gaps in the Museum's collections. The base of the jug is incised 'Angell and Company, 10 Strand, London'. The firm of Joseph Angell traded at this address from about 1849-1880 and advertised 'a large stock of second-hand and antique plate' for sale in 1851. It is possible that this 18th-century jug was bought by Joseph Bond from Joseph Angell who also added Bond's crest.
