This teapot is marked on the base with a registered design mark for January 1879. It is also marked 'JAR' for the maker, Jehoiada Alsop Rhodes, a crown for the Sheffield Assay Office, sterling and the date letter for 1878-9. The lid bears a sterling mark and a sponsor's mark. Sponsors' marks refer to the traditional makers marks. Such marks may represent the maker, factory, retailer or importer of a fashioned piece of silver, rather than simply the silversmith who produced it.

Teapot was acquired as an example of the late 19cth renaissance revival style and of the cheaper manufacturing and decorating techniques.
