Knife

1850-1851 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This fish knife is an example of the specialised serving equipment and cutlery that was popular from about 1800. The advantage of silver was that it did not taint the delicate flavour of the fish. The pierced decoration on this knife allowed any excess liquid to drain away.

Fish knives and forks and soup spoons became part of sets of silver flatware or cutlery and were often decorated with elaborate patterns. The fish slices and soup ladles that went with them were decorated with the same ornate patterns.
