  • Engraved round the central image of the mermaid in the bowl: + WHO : WOULD : BE : A : MERMAID : FAIR : SINGING : ALONE : COMBING : HER : HAIR : UNDER : THE : SEA : IN : A : GOLDEN : CURL : WITH : A : COMB : OF : PEARL (The inscription is a quotation from Alfred Tennyson's poem, 'The Mermaid', first published in his Poems, Chiefly Lyrical (1830).)
