This mug is marked on the base: 'M&Co.' for Middleton & Company of Calcutta, and with imitations of the castle and thistle marks of the Edinburgh Assay Office. Robert Brutus Middleton and Thomas Allardyce were partners in Middleton and Company between 1822 and 1834. Middleton had previously worked as assistant for Hamilton and Company, the largest importer of British silver into India.
