Kettle, part of a tea and coffee service, designed by Walter Stoye and manufactured by Barkentin & Krall. Silver and ivory. 1923.

The body of the kettle shaped and encircled below the spout with a frieze formed of two depressions bordered above and below with two running bands formed of small ovals punched in the surface. A neck of chased lozenges enclosing clustered stamped quatrefoils and circlesborded with running bands of ovals. Tapering cylindrical spout with two similar bowls enclosed by pairs of plain mouldings. Domed and stepped cover, hinged, stepped ivory knob. Faceted silver handle, the centre section ivory.

From service. Designed by Walter Stoye (1886-1974) for his wife. Stoye was a keen draughtsman who won a scholarship to the Central School of Arts and Crafts where he subsequently became a teacher in metal and enamel work. He also taught at the Brighton School of Art and the Camberwell School of Art. He is said to have joined the firm of Barkentin & Krall as a designer some time between 1912 and 1914. In 1915, he married Carl Krall's daughter Annie and succeeded his father-in-law as Managing Director after the First World War until it closed in 1935.
