This is a copy of a bowl designed and made by Jane Barnard. Unlike the original, this copy has an engraved coat of arms and a Latin motto – 'cura quietum' (‘regard your repose’).
The plain, rounded form is typical of Jane Barnard’s work. She was a pupil at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and from 1923 to 1939 was the designer for Edward Barnard & Sons. Her father was a director of the firm, which was one of the leading London silver manufacturers of the day.

Object history | Acquisition RF: 52 / 882a Bequest - Lady Sophia Mary Hall A copy of a bowl designed and made by Jane Barnard with addition of engraved arms. Plain, rounded forms were characteristic throughout her work. Jane Barnard was a pupil at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and from 1923-39 was the designer for the firm of which her father was a director, Edward Barnard & Sons, one of the leading London silver manufacturers. Presented by the Elizabeth Garret Anderson Hospital to Sophy, Lady Hall and bequeathed later to the museum. |
