Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This fork has a companion spoon decorated in the same style. Both sides of the handle are set with tortoiseshell panels inlaid with gold strips (a technique called piqué posé) and with tiny gold pins (called piqué point). The elegant design of scroll-work and leaves appears to be inspired by ornament prints by the French designer and engraver Jean Berain (about 1640-1711).

Object history | Acquisition RF: 13829/72 P. Verlet has suggested that the technique used on these objects preceded the vogue for pique under the Regence, and suggests that its use in goldsmiths' work may have been due to the influence of Boulle. The Wallace collection has a knife, fork and spoon set in this style. See: Bunt, C.G.E. "18th C. French Silver" (article archives) for general points. |
