This woman’s oval amulet case is of a type popular in western and southern Tibet. Such cases were strung onto bead necklaces. They were used to contain blessed items, and acted both as ornaments and as a means of protection, as the blessed objects were believed to offer defence against evil. This example consists of two halves that fit together, embossed on the exterior with foliage decoration.
