This necklace is of a type worn by women in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir State in India. Ladakh, on the western edge of the Tibetan plateau, stood for centuries on main trade routes between India and central Asia and Tibet. While much of its material culture is strongly Tibetan, some forms, such as the cylindrical amulets hanging from this necklace, are Indian in type and show southerly contacts.
