This mythical figure was made in a limited edition of 50. By commissioning Richard Garbe, a Royal Academician, Doulton lifted the popular figure to an elevated level, rivalling the stylish productions of continental manufacturers. The ivory matt glaze both recalled Greek and Roman marbles and was compatible with the 'modern' white-walled aesthetic of the 1930s.
