This amulet case or ‘jantar’ is of a type formerly worn in Nepal. It is decorated with the protective figure of one of the most important goddesses in Nepal, Durga, in her form called Mahishasuramardini, killing the buffalo demon Mahisha. Like Tibetan amulet cases, jantars were used to contain prayers written on paper or other blessed objects believed to protect the wearer.
