Place of origin |
The model is clothed in 18th-century ‘shepherdess’ dress and seated by a side table. Apart from the drapes covering the wall behind her, the studio is bare. One hand rests on the table. The other hand is clasped to the heart, as if the model is reflecting on a romantic attachment. As is usual in Hawarden’s compositions, there is a formal echo between the dark oblong of the side-table drawer and the white oblong outlined by a seam and the lower edge of the drapery. The lighting is managed so that the model’s bare shoulder becomes a highlight.
