The entire surface of this large hanging has been embroidered, in a wide range of stitches, to create a landscape featuring a peacock and peahen with a curtain of brocade panels and a flaming drum. The image alludes to part of bugaku, a ritual dance, during which a drum is beaten.

Object history | Purchased. Registered File number 1921/3893. Note on register: The glazed frame was received from Messrs. Harrod's Depository at Barnes, and it was bought for an additional sum of £21. The embroidery was on loan to the Museum from the owner from 4th November, 1903. It was sent at his request to Messrs. Christie's on 2nd November, 1920, and the frame to Messrs. Sotheby's on 16th February, 1921 (See Lot 133 in Sotheby's Sale, 29 April 1921.) The embroidery had a reserve of 50 guineas put upon it, and it was withdrawn from sale at both auction-rooms, the reserve not having been reached. |
