Manuscript Cutting
early 15th century (illuminated)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This is a leaf from an Antiphoner. The Antiphoner contained the choral parts for the cycle of Offices celebrated by a monastic or other community. Its size enabled the whole choir to read the music at once. The decorative initial, such as the initial S on this page, marked significant divisions of the text by making the heading memorable. The initials were added either by the scribe or by a specialist, in spaces left blank by the scribe. The latter was increasingly the practice in the later Middle Ages.
