Corbel
ca. 1500-1520 (carved)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Two flying angels, one bearing the cross, the other the column of the flagellation, hold a shield at the centre of the console on which are carved the scourge and flail with which Christ was beaten before his crucifixion. The console originally supported a seated figure of Christ crowned with thorns (now lost), of a type known in France as the Christ de Pitié. Such sculptures were particularly appropriately placed in hospitals and poorhouses, where those who passed by could offer prayers to Christ and place their own suffering in the context of one who had endured pain on their behalf.
