Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This poster by Ralph Steadman is one of a set of eight, commissioned by the Stop the War Coalition in 2003, in protest against Britain’s involvement in the US-led war in Iraq. Seven of Britain’s leading artists were commissioned to produce posters. The posters were signed and published in a limited edition of 100.
This collage-style poster by Ralph Steadman layers images and slogans to deliver its message. The words ‘War Kills’ echo the health warnings on cigarette packets. Images of cigarettes and the health warnings attached to their packaging contrast with the soldier’s helmet, suggesting the hypocrisy behind the actions of a government warning its citizens about the health hazards of smoking, while sending its citizens to die in a war.
