West View of the City of Edinburgh

Print
1753 (published)
Artist/Maker

This topographical view by Paul Sandby (1731-1809) shows Edinburgh Castle in the centre, with the Old Town, Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat in the middle left. George Heriot's Hospital is just to the right, behind the castle. The image was created in the late 1740s or early 1750s, before Edinburgh's New Town had been built.

Sandby had been employed to assist in a military survey of the Scottish Highlands, and spent some time in Edinburgh as a result. He met the engraver Alexander Bell, and was introduced to the art of etching. This is one of a number of prints Sandby made during or after the time he spent in Scotland.
