Palampore
1750-1775 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This is a classic example of the flowering tree design that was so popular for chintz furnishings in Europe from the early 18th century to the beginning of the 19th. This is an exceptionally well-balanced design, filling the central field with a sinuous branching tree with many fantastic flowers and leaves. The colours are unusually deep and bright, and the brightness of the white cotton ground suggests that the piece was rarely, if ever, used. It has an unusual border of a twisted stem through which are inserted bunches of flowers and a celery-like vegetable.
