Palampore

1750-1775 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Large chintz hangings with designs of huge trees, like this one, seem to have appealed particularly to the Dutch market in the 18th century. The exaggerated size of the blossoms in relation to the tree-trunk and the deep pinks and purples of the pallette are characteristics of chintzes made for the Netherlands at this time. The beautifully drawn flower-heads and leaves in the border are typical of the floral designs seen in other media in Holland at this time, particularly silver and carved wood and ivory.
