| Physical description | This rattle consists of three pieces of hand painted wood, each with two holes and threaded with black cord which is tied at the bottom. The central piece has a long handle with the shape of a hippo's top jaw at one end; there is a piece of wood hinged below representing the bottom jaw while above is a piece representing the top of the head.The whole is stained purple while the inside of the mouth is red. The eyes and nostrils are red, circled with a purple line. When the handle is grasped and shaken up and down the jaws come together to make a clapping, rattling sound. |
