Hippo rattle made in England by Rainbow Toymakers in 1986
Physical description
This rattle consists of three pieces of hand painted wood, each with two holes and threaded with black cord which is tied at the bottom. The central piece has a long handle with the shape of a hippo's top jaw at one end; there is a piece of wood hinged below representing the bottom jaw while above is a piece representing the top of the head.The whole is stained purple while the inside of the mouth is red. The eyes and nostrils are red, circled with a purple line. When the handle is grasped and shaken up and down the jaws come together to make a clapping, rattling sound.
