Place of origin |
This photograph shows Isabella Grace Maude, Lady Hawarden’s oldest child, who was born in 1847. She appears to float through the leafy, sunny wood, although she is wearing a crinoline. This wide, bell-shaped skirt gives her a spectacular High Victorian silhouette, set wittily against the forms of nature. Virginia Dodier, the biographer of Lady Hawarden, came to know the images of the photographer and her children so well that she was able to identify the subject of this picture.
