Brief description | Jonathan Richardson the elder (1667-1745), portrait drawing of the painter Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) |
Object history | According to George Vertue, the subject of this portrait, Thomas Hudson, was a pupil of Jonathan Richardson and had married Richardson's daughter Mary by 1725. Richardson made a drawing in red chalk on blue paper of Hudson some time in the 1720s (British Museum, 1852,0214.370). The V&A's drawing is very close in composition to the BM's, with the head at the same angle, and might be a preparatory study for it. |
