The Designers Guild was founded in 1970 by the then husband and wife team of Robin and Tricia Guild. Tricia Guild and designer Chris Halsey produced their first range of textiles based on a collection of Indian hand-printed fabrics. Launched at the opening of the first shop on the King's Road, Chelsea, in November 1971, the collection was an instant success and expanded with co-ordinating wallpapers and furniture. In 1992, the fine artist Michael Heindorff was commissioned to create a fabric range. The textiles in the resulting 'Still Life Collection' 'all share their reference in design and name to nature ... The palette is akin to the colours in many of my paintings, as are translucency and tone.' The three different colourways of 'Tracer' are also typical of the Designer Guild's abstract designs and bright, acid colours.

| Object history | Registered File number 1992/2495. Part of four T.428: 1 to 4-1992. Continuing an established tradition, Designers Guild commissioned the fine-artist Michael Heindorff to create a fabric range for 1992. The textiles in the resulting 'Still Life' collection 'all share their reference in design and name to Nature' according to the designer and 'The palette is akin to the colours in many of my paintings, as are translucency and tone'. There are six designs, each available in three different colourways, in the range, printed onto three different weights of cotton to add texture and dimension to the designs. |
