The wrigglework decoration on this Swedish beaker, pricked on with a fine tool, has the hand-made appearance that appealed to English collectors of 'Arts and Crafts' wares in the early years of the 20th century. The Museum acquired large numbers of Scandinavian silver drinking vessels between 1900 and 1910.

Trumpet shaped beaker, raised; parcel-gilt; engraved wrigglework leaf ornament on upper body, with engraved crown over cartouche, 2 bands of wavy branches, moulded foot chased and engraved with rocaille motifs, inside gilt.

  • On the base: maker’s mark I:LYBERG struck twice for Johannes Lyberg (1756-1831) who became a burgher and master ain Ulricehamn around 1788 and was working there until 1823, town mark a crowned U of Ulricehamn, year mark p2 for 1797, control mark the large 3 crown mark in force from 1765.

Silver Gallery: Jorck sold this beaker to the Museum for £8 10s 6d. Its wrigglework decoration, pricked on with a fine tool, has the hand-made appearance that appealed so much to the English market in the early years of the 20th century.(26/11/2002)
