Gallery label
Silver Gallery: Many of the cups in this display would have appealed to the aspiring merchant classes of South German towns. The inside of the cover of this cup has an enamelled plaque with a coat of arms within an inscription reading HANS. EZWILER. BURGER. ZU. STEIN AM RIN Ao 1635 (HANS EZWILER, CITIZEN OF STEIN ON THE RIVER RHINE, 1635) The figure on top of the cover is St. Catherine of Alexander a Christian saint and patron of education. She was tortured on a spiked wheel and beheaded for her Christian faith and here displays her emblems, the wheel and the sword.(26/11/2002)
