Flagon

ca. 1809 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This type of heart-shaped scent flagon was a common marriage gift in Denmark, northern Germany and Norway from the second half of the 18th century. This Danish example is set with a faceted rock crystal and is surmounted by a flaming heart, a symbol of love and religious devotion. The inscriptions on the front and the foot are of ownership. The initials on the foot dated 1811 are partly obliterating an earlier inscription of 1809, when the flagon was probably made.
