Chalice

1550-1575 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This chalice would have been used to hold consecrated wine during the Roman Catholic service of Mass. It was designed during the Renaissance period, when goldsmiths were inspired by secular forms and ornament from the classical world. Church silver was therefore often designed without religious imagery. This chalice is decorated with strapwork ornament (a pattern of interlaced bands or straps), a frieze with a walled town, a hunting scene, and a hare, mouse and dog. In the compartments on the foot are weapons, trumpets, drums and a skull's head influenced by ancient Roman marble reliefs. The only religious symbols are the figures of St. Peter, St. John the Baptist and St. Anthony of Padua.
